ABOUT US

Providing opportunities through the arts to people from marginalised communities.

The Nomad Two Worlds Foundation is a non-profit organisation supporting creative programs through the arts. We provide grants, scholarships, and funding to grassroots community projects — primarily in Australia and the USA.

Our mission is to create economic opportunities for people from marginalised communities through their art, while also raising awareness about the unique challenges these communities face — especially within Indigenous cultures.

WHO WE ARE

Founded by Russell James, a third-generation Australian with roots in Norway and England, the Foundation grew from a life shaped by art and cultural connection.

Russell’s journey began in Perth, Western Australia, and later in the remote town of Derby, where he experienced firsthand the intersection of modern and traditional cultures. His passion for photography took him around the world, and by the late 1990s, he became one of the world’s leading fashion photographers based in New York City.

In 2001, Russell launched Nomad Two Worlds, a photographic study exploring cultural identity and reconciliation in outback Australia. The project evolved into a collaboration with artist Clifton Bieundurry, Paul Boon, and Ali Franco, blending contemporary photography with traditional Indigenous art.

The result captured international attention, and by 2008 the collaboration expanded to include Indigenous Australian and Native American artists.

In 2009, with support from the Australian Government and figures including Hugh Jackman, Deborra-Lee Furness, Donna Karan, Anna Wintour, Professor Fiona Stanley, and Dr. Richard Walley, the Nomad Two Worlds Art Collection became a global touring exhibition — sparking dialogue and raising funds for community programs.

The Foundation has since partnered with organisations such as the Australian American Association, Clinton Global Initiative, Virgin Unite, Telethon Kids Institute, and Global Citizen Project.

Russell remains active on the Foundation’s board and continues to champion its mission of empowerment through art.
