The great serpent that created the Earth and all its features during the time of the Dreaming is at the heart of Walmajarri spiritual beliefs. This serpent, called Kalpurtu, rests at a sacred site. The spirit (pirlirr) of the serpent is i the significant water holes, springs and lakes of Walmajarri country. When a person visits one of those places that person is required to announce themselves, their tribal name and their ancestry to the serpent before touching that water. This ritual ensures the ongoing respectful relationship of peace between the physical and spiritual worlds.
