DISCOVERY PARMARR

Translation: Rocks and Stones / Adapted slang for money coins

5’ x 7’ archival pigment ink printed on rag cotton with acrylic and ochre applications.

James’ photograph of the unique white rock found in Geikie Gorge, Western Australia, portrays one of the oldest known rock formations in the world and is inspired by the quiet determination of ancient culture to prevail. In the wet season, the towering rock walls create a natural canyon that funnels massive amounts of water through the dry North Western Australian landscapes.

Bieundurry’s collaborative art shows two of the significant ancestors of the Walmajarri people. The two ancestors gained great powers and carried them on hair belts woven from human hair (tungkurr) that hung from their waists. The powers were strong and could be used to heal, protect or to harm enemies. The ancestors protect the spirits of those family members who are yet to be born into the Walmajarri.

The combined art piece represents a mutual symbol of protection for the collaborative cultures.
