INHIBITION TUNGKURL

Translation: The concept behind the object - responsibilities increase upon the presence of this object

Photograph by Russell James. Collaborative art by Clifton Bieundurry (AUS).

5’ x 6’3” archival pigment ink printed on rag cotton with acrylic and core applications.

James’ photograph represents the beauty of indigenous culture shrouded in the smoke of the smoldering fires of conflict.

Bieundurry’s collaborative art represents the hair belt known as Tungkurl, a symbol of his belonging. Bieundurry feels he has arrived at a point in life where the needs of the earth transcend his own human needs. Ultimately, the needs of the earth transcend all other in the end.

The art piece represents the powerful culture that lays beneath the thin layer of smoke (the present) and the need for a change in values in order to move forward in a united manner.
