INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIAN | INNOCENCE JARLUWARLANY
INNOCENCE JARLUWARLANY
Translation: The past, far back in time
Photograph by Russell James. Collaborative art by Clifton Bieundurry (AUS).
5’ x 7’ archival pigment ink printed on rag cotton with acrylic and ochre applications.
James’ interpretation of the twigs is that the wood is fuel for fire, a symbol for the time Inhibition, when modern culture reacted with fear and rage towards the ancient culture they could not comprehend. What appears ‘old’ to modern culture (the wooden sticks) appears extraordinarily temporary and fleeting to Australian Indigenous people.
The collaborative art by Bieundurry represents the will of his ancient indigenous culture to record their history and the different paths we take as individual human beings. While the medium of recording the history will perish, the knowledge and desire to remain true to spiritual beliefs will endure time.
The art piece represents two different cultural perspectives on the passage of time.
