Lakarnti are an edible grub often found inside the Coolibah tree (a form of eucalypt). Walmajarri women contribute to providing nutritious food for their family by gathering bush foods such as this. The curved symbols represent the women working together to seek out the grubs. They use digging sticks (traditionally made from ironbark wood) to dig around the Coolibah roots to extract the grub without destroying the tree. The grubs are usually roasted on the hot coals of a cooking fore and are high in protein.
